1:30 pm - 2:30 pm   Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): What is it and what do we do with it? - Dr. Kristine Dalton
TBI is the leading cause of death and disability in Canadians under 35. An estimated 60-75% of TBI patients experience visual symptoms, but oculovisual assessment is not yet part of routine care for these patients. This session will provide an introduction to TBI, current clinical management, and what can be done for patients at an OD's office.

2:30 pm - 3:30 pm   Management of Traumatic Brain Injury in Athletes - Dr. Kristine Dalton
Concussions are difficult to diagnose and monitor for recovery. One often leads to more, with the likelihood of recurrence increasing by approximately 30% after the first injury. Repetitive concussions are a risk factor for chronic traumatic encephalopathy and catastrophic brain damage in second impact syndrome Both conditions affect patients of all ages, particularly contact sport athletes. This session will provide an intorduction to management of TBI in athletes.

This presentation will provide an update on retinal prostheses, specifically the Argus-2 implant. Objectives include understanding how retinal prostheses work, indications for retinal implantation, surgery, the visual rehabilitation process and the role of interdisciplinary care teams for patients with low vision. Sponsored by Novartis

Featured Speakers

Dr. Sondra R. Black, OD, graduated from University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 1980. Since 2012, she has been Director of Clinical Opterations for Crystal Clear Vision Canada. Dr. Black is Board Certified in the Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease, VISX Custom LASIK Certified, an Orbscan Trainer for Technolas, and on the Optometric Advisory Board for Acufocus. She has lectured at major optometric meetings including American Academy of Optometry, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Vision Expo, AOA, SECO, ASOA and CAO, and has written articles for Optometric Management, Vision Voice, TLC E Vision, Review of Optometry, OSN, Primary Care Optometry News, and Refractive Eye Care.

Dr. Tenley Bower, ARCT, MD, FRCSC, completed her medical degree degree at University of Saskatchewan, and her ophthalmology residency at McGill University where she graduated with the Resident Surgical Skills Award. She completed a fellowship in Cornea, External Disease, Anterior Segment and Refractive Surgery at the U of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Bower has presented her scientific research at national and international ophthalmology meetings such as COS, AAO, and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and has published research papers in peer reviewed ophthalmology journals.

Dr. Kristine Dalton, OD, PhD, MCOptom, FAAO, FBCLA, joined the School of Optometry & Vision Science (U Waterloo) in 2013. She established the Vision & Motor Performance Lab and the Sports Vision Clinic. She has also helped to establish the Brain Injury Clinic, which opened September 2016. Dr. Dalton is a graduate of the Doctor of Optometry program (Waterloo), has an MSc (Dry Eye; Waterloo), a Cornea and Contact Lens Residency (Waterloo), and a PhD in sports vision (Vision Strategy in Golf; Aston U, UK). She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association.

Dr. Joshua Manusow, MD, FRCSC, Vitreoretinal Surgeon, is a lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology at the U of M. He practices at the Manitoba Clinic and operates at the Misericordia Hospital in Winnipeg. Dr. Manusow obtained his BSc (Hons) from McGill University and his MD from the U of M where he concurrently received a BSc in Experimental Surgery. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto and his Vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Toronto Western Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. His practice is open to all medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous.

Kimberly Shaw, BA, MBA, is Proprietor/President of The Right Fit Professional Group, where she delivers premier career coaching, recruiting, and communication services to her clients. She holds a Sociology Degree, an MBA where she graduated Beta Gamma Sigma on the Dean’s Honour List and Valedictorian, and is now completing her Masters in Counselling Degree. She recently received the national SSHRC award. Passionate about working with individuals in their pursuit of meaningful, challenging work in Manitoba, Ms. Shaw is focused on building positive relationships, delivering exceptional customer service, and contributing to her community.

Dr. Neil Swirsky, MD, FRCPC, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Rady College of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba, and Medical Advisor to Driver Fitness, Manitoba Public Insurance.



Continuing Education and the AGM will be held at the RBC Convention Centre. Hotel rooms are available under the group name "Manitoba Association of Optometrists" at both the Delta and Fairmont Hotels in downtown Winnipeg. Meals & Hospitality

Breakfasts and lunches are complimentary for CE attendees. The Joint Luncheon with MPOA will be on Saturday from 12:30 - 1:45 pm in meeting rooms 4 & 5 on the main floor of the RBC Convention Centre.

Hospitality on Friday from 4:45 - 7:30 pm will be in the private dining room adjoining Blaze Restaurant at the Delta Hotel. After 7:30 pm on Friday, the hospitality suite will be Room 528 at the Delta Hotel.

CE Locations

All Continuing Education and CPR will be held in room 2H on the 2nd floor of the RBC Convention Centre.

Annual General Meeting

The AGM will be held in room 2H on the 2nd floor of the RBC Convention Centre. It will begin at 9:00 am sharp, be sure to arrive on time to earn 1 hour of CE credit for attendance!

President's Banquet

The President's Banquet will be held on Saturday evening at the Millennium Centre, 389 Main Street, Winnipeg. Awards and Milestone Years of Practice pins will be presented and there will be a formal dinner and dance, with music by Barry Kay. We hope to see you there!
